Energy - Renewable and non-renewable energy
Non-renewable energy resources: ·Coal ·Oil ·Gas ·Nuclear
They are described as non-renewable as the resource will eventually run out.
Renewable energy resources: ·Wind ·Solar ·HEP - Hydro-Electric Power ·Tidal ·Wave power ·Biomass - the burning of organic material Geothermal - using heat from the ground to heat water to turn generators which generate electricity
Sustainable development Sustainable Development - it is very important that you understand the concept as it is a theme which will appear in almost every unit you study. Development which meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In practice this means: ›Protecting the environment ›Using more renewable sourcesof energy ›Involving local people in all levels of decision-making The video is about the crazy wombat. It discusses one of the central issues of sustainable development.
Wind energy
You need to know about one type of renwable energy in detail. We studied wind energy and speciffically that at Lambrigg in Cumbria.
Facts about Lambrigg wind farm in Cumbria §The land is 260m high and near the top of the ridge –strong winds throughout the year §In the path of the prevailing NW winds §Built on Moorland and the farmer can continue to graze his sheep §Existing connection to the national grid was close by – thus reducing costs §It is next to junction 37 of the M6 on the A684 – building costs were reduced §It is not in the National Park so there were less objections to the wind farm §The turbines are built just below the ridge thus reducing their visual pollution §Over 1km from away from the nearest house §Any noise is drowned out by the M6 Advantages of wind power:
It is safe - no harmful pollutants
Minimal effect on local ecosystems
Winds are stronger in winter which is good as the highest demand for electricity is now
Set-up is relatively expensive but running costs are low
Wind-farms provide a source of income for farmers who have wind turbines on their land
Disadvantages:
Wind does not blow all the time
Turbines can spoil the scenic views and affect wildlife
